Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (Istanbul Modern)
Turkey’s first private museum devoted to modern and contemporary art, Istanbul Museum of Modern Art is a world-class art museum located in a huge warehouse style building with wonderful views of the Bosphorus. Located in the Tophane neighbourhood of Beyoğlu district, the museum was inaugurated on December 11, 2004 with the aim of fostering an appreciation for art among the general public. Istanbul Modern features exhibition space on two floors in which work from the museum’s permanent collection is on display. Temporary exhibitions are located on the lower floor, along with extensive arts library and a cinema that provides audiences masterworks from the history of film-making, new productions, and examples of films and documentaries by Turkish and other countries’ artists. The museum also houses a museum shop that offers a wide selection of items that blend art and design, and a cafe and restaurant overlooking the Bosphorus that offers selections from Turkish and international cuisines.
